Description: 

Nova Analytical Systems, a Unit of Tenova Goodfellow Inc, a manufacturer of customized heavy-duty industrial products, is currently looking for a "Product Engineering Supervisor" to join our team in Hamilton, ON. Nova Analytical Systems has been designing and manufacturing dependable gas analysis equipment for over 45 years. The Product Engineering Supervisor working in the Technical Design Department, reports directly to the Plant Manager. This full-time position includes remote product support, customer service, and up to 30% travel to customer sites—both within the U.S. and internationally, often on short notice.

The Product Engineering Supervisor plays a crucial role in three main areas:

 

1. Technical Development

In coordination with the R&D department, the Supervisor leads the development of new gas sensors from prototype to final product, utilizing a Design-to-Cost approach. Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with the programming team on embedded code and calibration interface development
  • Designing, testing, and refining electronics for sensors and gas analyzers
  • Working closely with the manufacturing team to ensure seamless integration and production support
  • Leading technical vendor evaluations and qualifications

2. Product Engineering

The Supervisor owns the engineering support for the design and manufacturing of all Nova/TGI product platforms. Key duties include:

  • Maintaining the engineering and operational functionality of current product platforms, including sensor integration, software feature development, manufacturing configuration, and data communication
  • Ensuring product design integrity across the lifecycle, including making sound technical and commercial decisions that support sales and customer needs
  • Supporting cross-functional planning for next-generation digital platforms with enhanced capabilities

3. Customer & Product Support

  • Provide remote and on-site technical support for installation, commissioning, and aftermarket service globally
  • Work collaboratively with Sales to deliver robust technical solutions to customers

4. Team Leadership & Project Management

  • Supervise and lead the technical design team, providing day-to-day oversight, mentorship, and performance management
  • Assign, prioritize, and follow up on engineering tasks to ensure timely completion aligned with project and business goals
  • Manage complex projects involving multi-product customer solutions, coordinating resources, timelines, and deliverables across internal departments

Key Requirements

  • Stabilization of TGIR and SGIR Sensors: Lead efforts to stabilize the TGIR and SGIR sensors, ensuring reliable and consistent performance in the field. Less than +/-1% of full-scale on accuracy, linearity, and drift.
  • Introduction of New Sensors: Finalize the design for TGPPM sensors, and work with the design team to install them in appropriate analyzers for in-field performance monitoring.
  • Embedded Code Revision and Optimization: Revise and enhance embedded code for TGIR, SGIR, TGH2, and TGO2 systems, enabling sensor data communication through digital bus protocols (Modbus TCP/IP or RTU) to the analyzer's HMI.
  • Collaboration with External Contractors: Work closely with external contractor to gain deep insight into the DN platform’s embedded code. Work with the contractor to make modifications to bring the necessary commands to the digital bus for integration with the analyzer’s HMI.
  • Production & IT Support: Provide ongoing support to the production team in the areas of electronics, sensor troubleshooting and IT to ensure smooth day-to-day operations. Actively address production-related challenges.
  • Maximizing the Capabilities of the WH Display: Work closely with your supervisor to fully understand the capabilities and constraints of the WH display. Use the features already available in the WH platform wherever applicable to keep the need for JavaScript code as minimal as possible.
  • Provide Technical Assistance to Project Team: Work with project team (Mississauga Team), whenever requested, to help them in testing / developing new boards / systems.
  • Exposure to Major NOVA Product Platforms: Collaborate with production and design teams to set up training sessions to get detailed understanding of NOVA analyzers.
  • Universal Sensor Platform Development: In partnership with your supervisor and external contractor, establish a new system and network architecture which can be applied to all NOVA products and eventually upgraded to be used for the GPL product lines as well.
  • Autonomous Analyzer Development: Work with your supervisor and the design team to develop an analyzer (Hardware & Software) which can dynamically assess its health and can take detect, correct & suggest actions.
  • Ownership of Existing DN & FN platform code: Take complete ownership of revising/ modifying the existing NGC code for the DN & FN platform, to solve production & customer issues.
  • Field Support and On-Site Travel: Travel to field locations with your supervisor and/or the design team to understand the functionality of the analyzer and address customer issues. Identify and resolve any issues on-site with the remote support of the production team to gain valuable hand-on experience with the analyzer
  • Deep knowledge of analog circuitry for signal processing.
  • Troubleshooting techniques for signal-to-noise attenuation and analog-to-digital conversion.
  • Understanding of PWM/PID control logic.
  • Proficiency in C++ and microcontroller hardware/software development.
  • Experience with industrial instrumentation design, operation, and maintenance.
  • Expertise in microcontroller electronics and PCB layout, including analog and digital circuitry.
  • Proficiency in Windows-based support tools and software, including Excel, Matlab, Access, VB.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD for product design acceleration.

Position Specific Abilities

  • Bachelors of Instrumentation and Control/ Electronics/ Electrical or related Engineering program.
  • Lead sensor development projects from concept to completion.
  • Provide remote and on-site support for installation, commissioning, and service of Nova technologies.
